It was durian season again (peak around June and July). Many durian lovers in Singapore will either join a durian tour or drive up to Malaysia to have a durian feast at Tangkak , Johor. Tangkak is famous for durians in Johor. Some say Malaysia.
My wife's company too was organizing a family day trip outing to Tangkak last weekend. It was our first time to go on such durian tour. Since we love to eat durian we would not miss the opportunity.
The trip started at 6am from Singapore but we got stuck at Tuas due to massive number of buses clogged up the checkpoint. Apparently, there were many other durian bus tours going to Tangkak for a durian feast on the same day. It was estimated atleast 200 buses. May be more.
By the time we made it through Malaysia Immigration check point it was already half passed 9.
The tour first stop was for breakfast at Tasixi HK Dim Sum Place. It was located at Jalan Simbang, Taman Perling (Jln Belibis), 81200 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.
After breakfast and with about another 2 hours bus ride we arrived at Tangkak.
Our bus took the NorthSouth Highway Bukit Gambir Exit and another half an hour ride to reach our destination at the junction of road 23 and J34. GPS Lat:2.381806 Long:102.684753.
The place was packed with durian lovers. Buses lined the road and people seen queuing for their durians. Bus after bus unloaded passengers there. It was a "eat all you can" durian feast.
Curry chicken , fried rice noodle and some local fruits were also served. One thing missing though was the mangosteen. The queen of fruit was nowhere to be seen while the King ( durian) was everywhere.
One of the workers who was helping us to pry open the durians told me that he was already at work from 4am in the morning and did not have any breaks due to the crowd.
There are many locations for such durian feast. You can try out another location GPS Lat:2.308603 Long:102.530725. A friend of mine went there with another tour on the same weekend. It was located along road J123. About 200 meter from Sri Sakthi Ashram.
After filling our tummies with durians the tour took us to a Black Kuan Ying temple at Gerisek about 20 minutes from the durian stall. GPS Lat:2.227489 Long:102.655756
Next we headed to Yong Peng for some local produce shopping at Yoyo Native Food store. It sold local delicacies such as Dodol, Pineapple and traditional biscuits. There were also cheese cakes selling at RM30 per cake.
Before we headed back to Singapore we were treated to a dinner at Jumbo seafood restaurant. The restaurant was located in Taman Gaya , Johor Bahru.
After dinner we were suppose to go for shopping at Jusco Tebrau but was cancelled due to time constraint. We lost too much time when we got stuck at the immigration in the morning. By the time we reach Singapore first drop off point at Jurong East it was already 10:30pm.
